Both Cambridge Christian basketball squads were seeded in the No. 3 slots for their final weekend of action at the Christian Athletic League Finals hosted by Immanuel Lutheran in Mankato.
The Warrior girls will open play against No. 6 Hope Christian at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Also in their bracket is No. 2 Christian Life, with Rochester Area Home School (RAHS) the No. 1 seed in the other half of the brackets. Semis are 2:00 p.m. on Friday, with the 1:15 p.m. championship game on Saturday held at Mankato East H.S.
The CCS boys get going at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday against No. 6 Christian Life. The semis follow at 3:45 p.m. Friday, and the championship will be 3 p.m. at Mankato East.
Closing the regular season Feb. 24, both teams traveled to and defeated rival Christian Life. The Warrior girls held for a 52-49 win over the Hawks behind 16 points from Ellie Werlein (6 steals), 14 from Kristin Bergman (16 rebounds), 8 by Kellie Pedersen (13 rebounds/5 blocks) and 7 points from Seble Doble.
“Christian Life is seeded No. 2 going into the tournament, so it was a great win for us. We led by single digits most of the game and had to hold off a last-minute charge. Their press caused two quick turnovers to get them within 3 points with around 30 seconds to go,” replayed CCS Coach Brian Bergman.
“It came down to free throws for us– Kristin Bergman sank one with 23 seconds left to put us up by four. Because of our defense, the Hawks had to heave up a desperation three-pointer from about 27 feet which went in, leaving us up by one point with 4.4 seconds left. We just needed to get the ball in play safely. Bergman threw a long inbounds pass to Ellie Werlein who was immediately fouled and made both free throws. One half court miss, and we walked away with a great win (the team’s 20th on the season).”

In what turned out to be a playoff preview, the Warrior boys rolled past the Hawks behind 30 points by Peter Maring, with Josiah Scheumann adding 16 and Anders Boyum scoring 14. Josh Roble scored 9, with 6 points each from Jake Bergman and Grant Taylor.
Back on Feb. 21, the CCS boys downed neighboring rival Faith Foreston 75-70. Leading scorers were Bergman (16), Maring (15), Scheumann (15), Boyum (13) and Justin Roble (6).
