A look at Braham’s community center Print E-mail

The proposed Braham Community Center became easier to envision after drawings and blueprints were presented at the Feb. 1 regular Braham Council meeting.

Terry Lind, project manager/estimator with Construction Results Corporation, walked the council through the Rosa Architectural Group’s study. The Tusen Tack in Braham is the lead on the community center project, and that establishment was represented at the meeting by Dorothy J. Johnson, Joan Shockman and Jim Hieb.commctr.jpg

The project is budgeted at around $600,000 for the center. A banquet hall with dividers, capable of hosting 300 people, is the center piece of the plans. Food Shelf area, kitchen facilities, a multi-use room and two office/meeting rooms are included in the Phase I constructions plans.

The drawings depict a clean rural look to the design, with a bank of western-facing windows for the banquet hall and an overhang at the entrance for potential wedding limo/prom limo drop-off in inclement weather.

“This is a starting point for the needs of the building,” explained Lind to the council.

“If less money is received through the fundraising efforts, we can cut back the number of windows or lose the limo overhang.”

Johnson said the community center task force is working communication lines hard to pursue any funding out there to support the Tusen Tack direction.

“We’re working with every political person we can call. There’s a lot of people behind us on this project,” said Johnson.

She added that a key grant notification is being announced in March after the project’s application to the Lakes & Pines’ “Small City Development Program.”

“We could receive anywhere from $0 to $600,000 from the Lakes & Pines grant, so that’s a big one which will help determine how much money we will have to borrow,” said Johnson.

In other action, the council:

• Has a selection of water tower paint designs to study to determine the look of the future Braham tower. The members will offer their input at the next council meeting.

• Approved the $250 membership fee for the North TH 65 Corridor Coalition.

• Heard from City Administrator Sally Hoy that the USDA gave Braham the maximum 30 percent grant for the two new police squad cars recently purchased by the city.

• Approved the 2010 Braham Fire Department Officers list. (Line Officers) Chief Jeff Jones, Asst. Chief Dean Bondeson, Captain Shawn Fisher, Asst. Capt. Erik Wentworth. (Business Officers) President Dean Bondeson, Vice President Chris Campbell, Secretary Christy Schmakel, Treasurer Peter Hesselroth.

Next meeting: Tuesday, March 2, 7 p.m. 2009 audit presentation 6:15 p.m.

Well, guess that'll be nice, but it sure would be nicer if they could get the brown stuff out of the city water first!

Mike: Good Luck
How much is this going to cost the tax payers of the City of Braham. Be careful Braham leadership, many people are looking at moving out if they keep increasing property taxes (trust me). The water problem will be clean in a couple of years, once the new water system is put in. We will pay for this for the next 30 years!!! I bought a water softner and it did the trick.

Patty: Clarification of Building Ownership
Tusen Tack (with the help of other volunteer organizations and other Braham citizens) are working on building the community center. It is not being funded through any tax dollars. Tusen Tack will be the owner.
