A ‘Cambridgeville’ horror Print E-mail

Stephen King would be proud of one Cambridge family’s take on Halloween. The famed horror author may even find some inspiration.

Bill and Kristina Albright, 1535 Marigold Dr. S., Cambridge, along with help from family and friends, are once again going all out in transforming their multi-stall garage and yard into a fun yet sometimes gory display for trick or treaters Halloween night Saturday, Oct. 31.

Under dizzying strobe lights and tangles of spider web, scenes in the garage depict eyeball glaring skeletons playing poker in a creepy saloon; another such figure appears to be sadistically smiling over a corpse with a butcher’s knife sticking out of his head.Image

The yard immediately catches attention with a lighted path revealing a lighter side with fun Halloween characters...until reaching a hidden cemetery where rotting figures and desperate hands are trying to unearth themselves. On the other side of the house, another path takes trick or treaters to a shed. You don’t want to know what’s in there.

For five years now, Bill and friend Jeremy, also of Cambridge, have turned the Albright residence into a Halloween spectacle that grows with every year. (They usually get started a month in advance.)

And the community has taken notice since last year’s display attracted 609 kids, excluding adults, who couldn’t get enough of it, said Bill and Kristina.

Neighbors also add to the fun with unique displays of their own. Marigold Drive South is like a lighted Halloween block party in the weeks before the big day. “Last year the police were patrolling the street; it was just a sea of people,” exclaimed Michelle Kuzelka, Bill’s sister.

In addition to traditional candy handouts, the Albrights provide cups of hot apple cider to all adults who visit with their children. In fact, Cub Foods this year has agreed to help out with the cider, said Kristina, who simply requested the donation.

Interested in going? Here’s the directions:

From South Main Street, go east on 11th Avenue (at new traffic signal) and cross the railroad tracks. Take immediate right onto Old Main. Follow the curve eastward onto 16th Avenue SE. Keep eastbound for about a 1/2-mile and take a left (north) onto Marigold Drive South. House is second on left.
