Elizabeth A. Miller, 62, was sentenced to a 90-day jail term for inattentive driving on Aug. 5, 2009, announced Chisago County Attorney Janet Reiter. The term was stayed on the condition she have no same or similar violations within one year and complete the terms of her one year probation.

In addition, Miller was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, with $700 stayed and complete 100 hours of community work service, with at least 10 hours of that served by speaking to young drivers about the dangers of inattentive driving, Reiter said.

Stoeckel had been an instructor for Chisago Lakes Driver Education and was a passenger in a CLDE vehicle when it was struck broadside by a vehicle driven by Miller who failed to stop for the traffic signal at U.S. Hwy. 8 and Chisago Co. Rd. 23.

It was determined the 15-year-old student driver, of Lindstrom, who was not injured, had the right of way as the driver’s education car proceeded through the intersection. Neil Stoeckel’s family requested that Miller be required to speak to student drivers as part of her sentence, Reiter said.

I know Neil for a number of years and to see this person got off with nothing is a crime. A life means nothing. Driving a car and killing someone is like shooting them with a gun. A car is a deadly weapon! It is time to put the sentence to fit the crime!

Having this woman speak to young adults about inattentive driving is a great idea. It's very sad what happened but are you suggesting this woman should go to jail for murder? If she had deliberately broadsided Neil, then this would be just. She made a mistake, she will have to live with Neil's death on her soul.
