Both the intoxicated driver and the owner of a car that crashed into a motorcycle on Hwy. 65 in the early hours of June 10 have been charged with criminal negligence.
Kylie Ann Sullivan, 19, of Lino Lakes, was at the wheel of the vehicle when it turned into the wrong lane of Hwy. 65 at 244th Street about 3:40 a.m. With the car’s owner, Damion Michael McGrath, 19, of rural Isanti, in the passenger seat, she drove north in the southbound lane.
At Town’s Edge Road (277th Lane N.E.) she struck a motorcycle driven by Bryant Elmer Brown, 41, of Stanchfield, head-on.
Brown, who was critically injured, was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center with serious fractures to his left leg. He is currently in fair condition, indicated North Memorial media relations on Tuesday, June 16.
According to the criminal complaint filed in 10th District Court, both Sullivan and McGrath admitted to having been drinking alcohol and both appeared intoxicated at the scene.
They appeared before Judge P. Hunter Anderson June 12 where Sullivan was charged with felony criminal vehicular operation-operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner and misdemeanor charges of DWI, driving without a valid license and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
Bail was set at $50,000 without conditions or $20,000 with conditions. She is to have no contact with McGrath while the case is pending.
McGrath was charged with felony aiding and abetting criminal vehicular operation and consumption of alcohol by a person under 21 years.
Judge Anderson set bail for McGrath at $40,000 without conditions or $10,000 with conditions and ordered him not to have contact with Sullivan while the case is pending.
A probation violation is pending based on violating conditions of a controlled substance possession conviction out of Pine County that required him to remain law-abiding and to abstain from the use of alcohol.
The felony charges in the case could be amended upward should Brown’s injuries prove to be more serious.
