St. Urho’s Day

Last week we discussed St. Patrick’s Day, so in all fairness to our Finnish friends, we must recognize St. Urho’s Day. St. Urho’s Day is celebrated on March 16, the day prior to St. Patrick’s Day. The legend of St. Urho originated in Northern Minnesota in the 1950s, and has grown among North Americans of Finnish descent. Today St. Urho is celebrated in the U.S., Canada, and Finland. In 1975 Governor Wendell Anderson recognized St. Urho’s Day with a proclamation in Minnesota.

The legend of St. Urho says he chased the grasshoppers out of Finland, thus saving the grape crops and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers. How did he do this? Well … he uttered the phrase: “Heinasirkka, heinasirkka, mene taalta hiiteen” (translation: “Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to hell!”).

Many Finnish communities celebrate St. Urho’s Day by wearing royal purple and nile green. Sometimes it’s an excuse to add an extra day of celebration to St. Patrick’s Day. Yet in many Finnish communities, St. Urho’s Day is the celebration, and St. Patrick’s Day is the day to sleep off the hangover. An interesting tradition in Finland, Minnesota is the “Queen for a Minute” parade queen. A young lady sits on the back of a convertible as the parade queen, and every now and then the convertible stops and the sitting queen departs in favor of a new queen picked from the crowd. Over the course of the parade, there is usually at least 15 different queens.

SAC’s will have a special treat on St. Urho’s Day for all our Finnish friends as well as serving up corn beef and cabbage. Be sure to stop in and celebrate with us.
