Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with SAC’s

On March 17 we observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become a day to celebrate Irish culture. Celebrations often include dancing, special foods, parades and a whole lot of green. In the 1700s Irish immigrants in the U.S. started the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City. The most famous tradition Irish saying is “Erin go bragh,” which means “Ireland forever!”

On St. Patrick’s Day it is customary to wear green clothing or accessories. Do you know where this tradition came from? St. Patrick’s merrymakers thought wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns, who would pinch anyone they could see. People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers. Interesting. Now that you know the history behind why we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, are you planning on wearing green on March 17? I know we are.

Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish. SAC’s will be serving this for lunch on Thursday, March 16, along with other Irish fare. And then our celebration continues with Act III: The Lawrence Welk Show in the City Center Mall on Friday, March 16 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 17 at noon. This will include great entertainment and a delicious meal. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased in advance by calling 763-689-6555, as there is limited seating of 80 people per show. All proceeds go toward storage cabinets in SAC’s activity room. Hope you come to join in the fun and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with us.
