The Cambridge-Isanti wrestlers close out their season after three Bluejackets participated in the Individual State Tournament on March 3 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Three wrestlers qualified for the tournament that included juniors Martin Puttbrese (152), Will Flemister (220), and senior captain Casey Schlickenmeyer (126).

All three wrestlers were eliminated early on and did not place. According to Head Coach Neil Jennissen, it was the first time in all of his years with the team that they did not have a wrestler place at the tournament.

While the outcomes were not what they had hoped for, Jennissen is proud of what his team has accomplished.

“First of all, it is a great accomplishment. Section 7AAA is one of the most competitive sections around,” he said. “We had some tough draws, all of our guys lost to a place winner.”

While Schlickenmeyer and Puttbrese faced their fates via falls, Flemister was on the verge of advancing. According to Jennissen, had he received “fall” points near the end, he may have won the decision.

Puttbrese and Flemister will have their chance to lead the charge back to the State Tournament next season and now have the experience under their belts. For Schlickenmeyer, it will be the finale of his Bluejacket career.

“It was a really great experience for ‘Schlick’ to be down there, and I’m glad he got to take part in it,” Jennissen added.
