Remembering Pearl Harbor

December 7 will be the 75th commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I’m sure for many of you Pearl Harbor survivors and World War II veterans this is a day that will never be forgotten. President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy.”

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory. This bombing killed more than 2,300 Americans, destroyed the American battleship U.S.S. Arizona and capsized the U.S.S. Oklahoma. One hundred and sixty aircraft were destroyed and 150 others were damaged. The attack took our country by surprise.

Most people knew what this attack meant for the U.S. Our country would declare war on Japan. Within days, Germany and Italy—Japan’s allies—declared war on the U.S., and this brought the U.S. into World War II. December 7 was, indeed, the “date which will live in infamy.”

Do you know anyone who fought in the war? Take the time to listen to their memories of this day. These people are heroes who made sacrifices for us. In remembering Pearl Harbor, we pay tribute to the patriotism, sense of duty and uncommon valor of these soldiers who risked their lives defending the United States. Thank you to all those who served and paid the ultimate price. We honor you today—75 years after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor.
