Bowling for Buzz event for relatives of Cambridge family

Support the Bonnette family by coming out to the Bowling for Buzz benefit from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Elsie’s in northeast Minneapolis. Renee Bonnette is the sister of C&H Siding and Remodeling co-owner Rande Christensen of Cambridge.

Buzz Bonnette of Blaine was diagnosed in April 2014 with Stage IV sarcamatoid renal cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer. It started his family’s worst nightmare. By the time it was diagnosed, the cancer had metastasized to his left lung. In June, another scan showed it had spread to his brain.

His diagnosis came on the heels of his wife Renee’s fight with Acromegaly, a tumor behind the pituitary gland. She had surgery in 2013, but doctors were unable to remove the entire tumor and she has continued treatment for that condition.

Buzz stopped working in January 2014 because of his illness. He began chemotherapy and radiation treatments in June, but they were stopped in August when scans revealed that the tumors hadn’t shrunk. A few days later, on Tuesday, Aug. 5, Buzz passed away.

“This entire process can be so very grueling,” remarked Renee. “Most days it can be very difficult to find a bright spot. But when things seem to be at their very darkest God sends in one or more of his angels.”

Money raised at the Aug. 16 benefit will be used to cover the medical and other bills that have piled up.

“My parents are incredibly generous people,” said Sarah Mack, also of Blaine. “They would give the shirts off their back to help someone out. They’ve never asked for anything from anyone. But now they need help.”

Organizers opted to hold the event at Elsie’s because it is a place that Buzz and Renee love. They’ve been on the No Moore Saturday night Bowling League there for over 15 years. The day also marks Buzz and Renee’s 39th wedding anniversary.

The event will also include a silent auction (ends at 3:30 p.m.), games, prizes, bake sale, kids activities and more. The fee for bowling is $10 (includes shoes). Elsie’s Bowling Center is located 729 Marshall St. NE in Minneapolis.
