Shrek & Donkey square off on Cambridge stage

Play Inc’s ‘Shrek’ strides on stage this weekend

An ogre is taking over the Richard G. Hardy Performing Arts Center. Shrek the Musical, based on the DreamWorks animated movie, is set to make a very green appearance this weekend with four performances.

Performances will be at the Richard G. Hardy Performing Arts Center at Cambridge-Isanti High School, July 25 at 7 p.m., July 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and July 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at, by clicking on “ticket.”

For Play Inc.’s 10th season things are bigger, brighter, and with this show much more magical. Featuring an 18-foot dragon, a growing Pinocchio nose, and very cool transformations, there is so much that will leaving you wondering how they did that? Oh — and did we mention over 80 costumes built from scratch?

Shrek follows the story of an ogre whose cozy cesspit of a swamp has become the new home to displaced fairytale creatures. In order to get them off of his land, he is sent on a quest by Lord Farquaad, who is “a little intimidating” to say the least. On his quest to save Princess Fiona from the castle guarded by a dragon, Shrek is joined by his new friend, Donkey– whether he likes it or not. In the end, you can’t help but root for Shrek.

The musical version takes the well-known movie and spins great songs out these characters. Not to worry, the musical does include the always-popular “I’m a Believer” to cap off the evening.

Play Inc is certain your entire family will have a great time at this production, which is proving to be the biggest production they have ever done. Don’t miss out.
