C-I Softball falls to East in playoffs, Bombers open 5A tourney with ‘W’

In the May 20 Section 7AAA opening round, Duluth East broke open a 2-2 game after four innings by scoring three runs in the fifth and sixth to end Cambridge-Isanti’s season with an 8-4 win.

Kate Hanson pitched the first three innings for the Bluejackets, with Jenna Ramberg going the last four. Josie Potrament had a double and RBI for the Jacket offense. Kayla Bowker was 1-for-2 with two walks, and Sydney Larkin was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Duluth East, the No. 11 seed, will next face No. 3 Elk River when the 7AAA Tourney slides down to the Andover complex on Saturday. Anoka is the No. 1 seed, Forest Lake is the No. 2 and Chisago Lakes is the No. 4 seed in the tourney that moves to Chisago Lakes for the May 28-29 final four.

• The Bluejackets wrapped up the Mississippi 8 schedule with two wins in their last three games. On May 15, C-I handled host Princeton 12-1. Supplying RBI hits early against the Tigers were Lauryn Swanson, Abby Glotzbach, Ramberg and Maria Vavra. The Bluejackets also defeated North Branch 4-3 and fell to Buffalo 7-6 last week.

• The Braham fastpitch squad opened the Section 5A playoffs with a 3-1 win at No. 3 East seed McGregor on May 20. The No. 6 seed Bombers next will play at No. 2 Rush City on May 21 after the Tigers defeated Hinckley 15-1 in their opener.

The 5A East tourney continues at Mora on May 22 with 4 p.m. games. GRC champ Isle is the No. 1 seed in the East, and Eden Valley-Watkins is the top seed in the West.

On May 16, the Bombers split with Hinckley 17-1 and 4-1. Angie Bendickson threw a no-hitter in Game 1 and also rapped out two hits. Janessa Malone and Lizzie Altendorf added two hits for the Bombers.
