Bluejackets Tennis marches through many matches

Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis filled the past week with matches, catching up on the schedule when the weather finally improved. The action began with a 5-2 conference win at Princeton May 6 when the doubles pairings swept.

At No. 1 Doubles. Derek Belford and Jay Gislason attacked for a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Carlo Holmberg and Nino Merkouris prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, and Raffy Hernando and Jonah Benson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Adding victories at singles against the Tigers were Devin Gislason at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3) and Jed Bingham at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0).

On Wednesday, the Bluejackets traveled to Monticello who won the M-8 match 7-0. The Magic held for three three-set wins at No. 3 Singles, and the Nos. 2 and 3 Doubles battles.

On May 9, Rogers came to town, and the Royals held in late action for a 4-3 close win. D. Gislason at No. 3 Singles won 6-2, 6-3 for C-I. Adding doubles victories were Holmberg & Merkouris (6-3, 6-1) and Hernando & Benson (6-4, 4-6, 6-4), with those two rallying nicely after being down 1-4 in the last set. Belford & J. Gislason also pushed their Royals foes to a third set before falling 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, and Destin Modina won five games at No. 1 Singles.

A month after it was first scheduled, the C-I Triangular invite was hosted here on Saturday. The Bluejackets opened with a 7-0 victory over conference partner North Branch. Taking their singles matches were Modina (6-0, 6-0), Thomas Phillips (6-1, 6-1), D. Gislason (6-0, 6-0) and Bingham (6-1, 6-0). Belford & J. Gislason won a tie-breaker in the first set, then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set.

The afternoon match saw section partner Cloquet gain a 4-3 win over the Bluejackets by rolling to three singles victories, along with taking a tight match at No. 1 Doubles. Holmberg & Merkouris (7-6, 6-1) and Benson & Hernando (6-2, 6-2) kept playing well for the Bluejackets who already will enter section team tourney action May 19-20.
