SPORTS ROUND-UP:   Cambridge-Isanti’s Jade Newman was meet medalist with an 80 to lead the Bluejackets to a 2nd-place finish at the May 5 Mississippi 8 East round on the Princeton Golf Club.

Teammate Anna Sunderman was 2nd in the individual standings with an 86. Following her on the team were Jade Lamb (119), Elizabeth Poppen (121), Amelia Utecht (128) and Evan Gorham (129). St. Francis had three golfers finish in the 90s to score a 382, bettering the Jackets’ 406.

The Bluejackets got in their first golfing in over a week at the May 2 Milaca Invite. The Bluejackets placed 5th out of 10 teams in the modified doubles format, led by Sunderman & Newman taking 2nd at 81.

Bomber Golf sweeps Pine City

The Braham boys defeated Pine City 173-203 in a May 2 GRC meet at Sandstone. Co-medalists for the Bombers were Quinn Richmond and Brandon Brown who came in at 42. Right behind them were Terry Gruba (43), Hunter Richmond (46), Alex Kurvers (48) and Kyle Johnson (52).

Caitlin Richmond captured the medalist title with her 48 when the Bomber girls clipped the Dragons 214-235. Ali Anderson (49), Courtney Vanderport (57), Emma Downing (60) and Ariel Ramstad (63) also shot for Braham.

Bluejacket Boys  Tennis tops Vikings

Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis picked up its second conference victory by sweeping North Branch 7-0 May 1. Giving up just 10 games total in singles matches were Destin Modina (6-1, 6-1), Thomas Phillips (6-1, 6-1), Devin Gislason (6-1, 6-1) and Jed Bingham (6-2, 6-2). Taking the doubles matches over the Vikings were Derek Belford & Jay Gislason (3-6, 6-3, 7-5), Nino Merkouris & Carlo Holmberg (6-2, 6-0), and Raffy Hernando & Jonah Benson (6-1, 6-2).

On May 2, the Bluejackets battled hard in a number of close matches before host Buffalo won 5-2 in M-8 action. Holmberg and Merkouris pulled out a 13-11 advantage in the super tie-break to win at No. 2 Doubles. Bingham took his No. 4 Singles match 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

“Destin played an incredible match at No. 1 singles, playing the most confidently yet this season,” noted Coach Thea Lowman. “He battled back to take the second set in a tie-break before ultimately dropping the third set 3-6.”

C-I Softball splits  at St. Francis

Cambridge-Isanti’s record is sitting at 3-4 overall after splitting a May 6 double-header at St. Francis. The Saints took Game 1 14-4, then the Bluejackets turned the tables 6-4 in Game 2. On May 1, Rogers defeated C-I 11-1 in another Mississippi 8 game.
