The Isanti County community and beyond are mourning the death of Isanti County Commissioner Larry Southerland on March 19.
Southerland, 63, was diagnosed with lung cancer in February and was getting treatment through Abbott Northwestern Hospitals. He passed away at home surrounded by family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at the Braham Area Community Center, 655 8th Street SW with Rev. Richard Chronis officiating. A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Strike Funeral Home – Cambridge Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the community center on Monday. Interment will be in Rice Lake Cemetery in Braham.
A life-long resident of Isanti County, Southerland spent more than 40 years in public service.
He was hired as an Isanti County deputy sheriff in 1971, and promoted to criminal investigator in 1980. He later served three terms as Isanti County Sheriff; first elected in November 1990, and re-elected in November 1994 and 1998.
Southerland later brought his experience to the Isanti County Board. He was first elected District 2 County Commissioner in November 2002, and re-elected in November 2004, 2008 and 2012. He was currently serving as vice-chair of the board.
Commissioner District 2 includes city of Braham, as well as Dalbo, Maple Ridge, Springvale, Stanchfield and Wyanett Townships.
In his spare time, Southerland enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting classic cars. He remained active in many local and regional community organizations. He received the Isanti County Human Rights Award in 2004.
Southerland was a graduate of Braham High School and St. Cloud State University.
