Another chapter in the always-entertaining Cambridge-Isanti vs. St. Michael-Albertville wrestling saga played out in the Section 7AAA Team championship Friday night. The 2nd-ranked Knights finished stronger in a handful of matches to defeat 4th-ranked C-I 32-25 after the Bluejackets steamrolled through their first two opponents on the St. Francis mats.

At 106, C-I’s Carlo Holmberg limited 5th-ranked Aaron Dick to a 10-3 decision to start the match. Bluejacket Brady Kuntz finished a blistering night of fast pins by getting a 47-second stick at 113 for his team’s first points. STMA’s top-ranked duo of Mitch McKee and Tommy Thorn followed with majors for an 11-6 edge.

At 132, C-I’s James Fredriksen scored well in the third period for a 15-2 major, but STMA’s Donny Leuer countered with a late takedown and nearfall for a 5-1 decision at 138. No. 1 ranked Mark Voss racked up a tech fall at 145, and teammate Lucas Jeske got a late three-point turn for an 8-0 major at 152 as the Knights’ advantage grew to 23-10.

C-I senior James Fredriksen picked up backpoints in his 15-2 major against STMA’s Schoen.

Cody Skog, ranked 4th at 160, had the Jacket crowd roaring with his second-period fall to make it 23-16. But an overtime win by STMA’s Evan Foster at 170 and an 8-2 decision from Ryan Jones at 182 had the Jackets in a perilous spot. Fourth-ranked Jake Briggs then wrapped up the win for the Knights in a 3-2 tussle at 195.

The Bluejackets’ final points came by a fall from 5th-ranked Kyle Chromy at 220 and a 3-1 OT win from Spencer Simon at 285.

“Again, a State tournament-caliber match in the Section 7AAA finals, and again, a heart-breaking loss to St. Michael-Albertville in the finals,” noted C-I Coach Neil Jennissen. “The dual could have gone either way – hats off to the Knights who wrestled very well.”

• In the semis, C-I ripped St. Francis 61-9 after the Saints upset Anoka and the Jackets beat Forest Lake 62-9 in the quarters. A Holmberg 7-3 decision was followed by falls from Kuntz (32 seconds), Monty Fredriksen and Travis Swanson for an early 21-0 Jacket lead. The pin party kept rolling with Reegan Lane, Caleb Brennan and Skog which wrapped up the win by the 170 match. Chromy added a pin at 220, and Jake Pasch, Dakota Johnson and Spencer Simon all won by decisions for C-I.

• State berths are on the line this weekend at Coon Rapids H.S. for the Section 7AAA Individuals. Start times are 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
