Bluejacket boys clip East in OT

Cambridge-Isanti Basketball updates: Cambridge-Isanti boys basketball out-scored visiting Duluth East 5-4 in overtime for a 62-61 victory matching Bluejacket head coach Mike McDonald against his son, Grehound head coach Rhett McDonald.

Kyle McDonald paced the Bluejackets with 17 points, with 14 points netted by Devin Malik and Matt Swanson. Hunter Vavra scored 11 and Nate Cox 6 against the ‘Hounds.

• On Feb. 6, Swanson scored 24, Cox 14 and McDonald 12 in a 74-64 loss to Rogers. The Bluejackets then defeated host Duluth Denfeld 73-67 on Saturday.

• On Feb. 11, St. Francis swept the season series with C-I in 69-56 Mississippi 8 contest. Leading the Bluejackets that night were Swanson (23 points), McDonald (12), Cox (7) and Malik (6).

C-I Girls beat Royals

Lily Porta sunk two three-pointers during an 11-0 Bluejacket run early in the second half when host Cambridge-Isanti knocked off Rogers 59-50. Porta finished with 23 points, and Justine Larson led with 24 points and 6 rebounds. Sydney Larkin fed 5 assists, and Brooke Olson gathered 6 rebounds against the Royals.

• On Feb. 11, St. Francis broke a 33-33 tie with a three-pointer and held the lead to the end for a 48-45 home win over the Bluejackets. Larson and Porta both scored 12, and Maria Vavra added 10 for C-I.

Mississippi 8 Girls Basketball: East: Chisago Lakes 6-3, 15-4; Cambridge-Isanti 5-4, 10-9; Princeton 3-6, 9-10; St. Francis 3-7, 7-13; North Branch 1-6, 9-10.  West: St. Michael-Alb. 10-0, 16-4; Monticello 7-2, 16-5; Rogers 6-4, 13-8; Buffalo 5-4, 11-9; Big Lake 0-10, 3-17.

Rhett McDonald and Alecia (Johnson) Hanson, flanked by C-I coaches Jody Ledahl and Mike McDonald, were inducted into the Jacket Hoops Boosters Hall of Fame at the Feb. 10 game. Rhett, now coaching Duluth East, is the Jacket boys all-time assists leader (409) and is 4th all-time with 1,055 points. Alecia was the point guard for the 1999 Jacket girls who took 4th in Class AAA State, and she finished her C-I career with 212 assists and 174 steals.
