Emotions run high during CIHS One Act play “Nora’s Lost”

While lost in the woods Nora, (Aurora Wahlstrom) envisions her daughter Martha (young Martha: Nicole Bergman) and herself (young Nora: Maria Leibel) fawning over the birth of her granddaughter, Robin. Nora (Aurora Wahlstrom) sees the image of one of her former students (Mackenzie Kruse) while lost in the woods.  Young Nora (Maria Leibel) discusses her concerns with playing with guns with her son Mark (Michael Carlson) and his friend Jack (David Knutson), and reiterates the fact that soldiers are currently fighting in a war with real guns. Young Nora (Maria Leibel) pleads with Bill (Tristen Sima) to describe to her how her son Mark died while serving in the Vietnam War. Young Nora (Maria Leibel) and her husband  Gene (Sam Peters) break down in tears upon learning of their son’s death while serving in the Vietnam War. Nora’s daughter Martha (Hannah Kloeckel) tells her daughter Robin (Madeline Kohn) about the life of her grandmother. Young Nora (Maria Leibel) says a prayer for her son Mark (Michael Carlson) who is serving in the war. Nora (Aurora Wahlstrom) goes frantic when remembering a time when her daughter Martha went missing. Pictured is Young Nora (Maria Leibel) and her husband Gene (Sam Peters). The Cambridge-Isanti High School One Act team has been working hard on its performance of “Nora’s Lost” by  Alan Haehnel. 

A summary of “Nora’s Lost” is as follows, “Debilitated by Alzheimer’s disease, Nora Blodget follows the vision of her late husband into the woods on a cold night. Nora’s life flashes before her — revealing her former life as a dynamic teacher, a caring wife, and a loving mother. Will Nora’s daughter find her mother in time? This poignant large-cast one-act explores the nature of memory and familial love, fractured by the onset of dementia.”

The public is invited to a performance of “Nora’s Lost” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Hardy Performing Arts Center at Cambridge-Isanti High School. The performance is free and all are welcome to attend.

The team attended the Mississippi 8 One Act Play Conference meet Jan. 18 at Chisago Lakes High School. The production was awarded a Star Performance by the directors in the Mississippi 8 Conference. Being chosen as All-Conference were Aurora Wahlstrom, Maria Leibel, Hannah Kloeckel and Cate Ryeng. All-Conference Honorable Mention went to Sam Peters and Nicole Bergman. The team also earned an Academic Conference award of a Gold Standard.

Next, the CIHS cast and crew will travel to Elk River on Saturday, Jan. 25 for the Subsection tournament which begins at 10 a.m. The CIHS team will perform at 2:45 p.m. The event is open to the public, and all performances are free. The teams placing in the top two will advance to the Section tournament Feb. 1 in St. Francis.
