Bluejackets sweep hoops doubleheader at N. Branch

BASKETBALL UPDATES:   The Cambridge-Isanti basketball squads had a fun doubleheader of games at North Branch Jan. 16, with the Bluejackets taking both tight conference battles.

The C-I boys broke a 22-22 halftime game with a strong second half for a 58-49 win over the Vikings. Nate Cox led the way with 25 points. Scoring 8 points each were Hunter Vavra, Matt Swanson and Kyle McDonald, with Jake Johnson adding 6 points.

• The Bluejacket girls outlasted North Branch 51-49 in overtime to get their win on Thursday night. Lily Porta sunk two free throws late in regulation to forge the tie. Then she, Marsha Porta and Lauryn Swanson all scored in the OT session for the victory.

L. Porta led C-I with 22 points, and Justine Larson doubled up with 10 points and 10 rebounds. M. Porta (7), Maria Vavra (4) and Shelby Swanson (4) followed in scoring for the Jacket girls. L. Porta, Larson and Sydney Larkin combined for 10 steals to lead the defense.

• The Jacket Hoop Boosters will host its 7th Annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 26 from 8:00 am to 1:00pm at Christ the King Parish Hall. Cost: $6.00 (all you can eat Pancakes, French Toast, Eggs, Sausage, Coffee, Juice and Milk)

Braham hoops take two from Isle

Braham boys basketball extended its Great River win streak to 60 games after defeating host Isle 77-49 Jan. 16.

John Larson sunk 11 field goals for 22 points, doubling up with 11 rebounds while also finishing with 7 assists for the Bombers. Zach Dahlman added his own double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Randy Braund (12), Chris Olson (9), and Connor Tschumper followed in scoring. Braund, Ryan Larson and Alec Olson all swiped 5 steals to torment the Huskies.

• On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Bomber boys will be part of a special three-game basketball package at St. Cloud State when they take on Melrose at 8:15 p.m. One ticket purchase will get fans into that game along with the 4 p.m. SCSU women’s basketball vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead and the 6 p.m. SCSU men’s basketball vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead (with Braham native Tyler Vaughan) contests.

• The Bomber girls handed Isle its first loss on the season with a 53-33 home win Jan. 17.
