Key steals lead to Braham boys win at Aitkin

BASKETBALL UPDATES: Braham needed a push at the end to record a 52-50 Great River victory at  Aitkin Jan. 13 in the make-up game from last week. Connor Tschumper’s steal and feed to John Larson broke a 48-48 tie.

After the Gobblers re-knotted the game, Larson scored his 21st point on a jumper with eight seconds to go, then Randy Braund sealed it with a steal on Aitkin’s last possession. Braund finished with 7 steals, and Zach Dahlman had 6 swipes as the Bombers finished with 21 steals and forced 30 Gobbler turnovers. Dahlman finished with 11 points and 3 rebounds, and Chris Olson scored 10 in the win.

At home Jan. 10, the Bombers stormed to a 46-18 halftime lead en route to defeating East Central 78-42. Larson again scored 21 points, followed by Olson (16), Tschumper (14), Dahlman (11) and Braund (9). Dahlman and Tschumper both led the team with 8 rebounds, and J. Larson and Ryan Larson combined for 11 assists.

Braham Girls 71, E.C. 32

Kayla Nickles scored 23 points and Jenna Winter turned in 22 when the Bombers knocked off host East Central 71-32 Jan. 9. Jaclyn Hollenkamp doubled up with 14 points and 10 rebounds while dishing 8 assists in the win. Those three Bombers combined for 16 steals. Additional scoring came from Angie Bendickson (5) and Lizzi Altendorf (4).

• The Bombers earned a 64-52 win at section-partner St. Cloud Cathedral Jan. 14.

C-I Girls open M-8 with win

Cambridge-Isanti used an 11-2 burst to create space late in the second half to leave Princeton with a 67-55 win opening the Mississippi 8 girls basketball schedule Jan. 10. Justine Larson and Lily Porta both scored 20 points to lead the Bluejackets, and Brooke Olson pulled down 12 rebounds. More scoring came from Shelby Swanson (8) and Maria Vavra (7).

• The Bluejackets received 13 points from both Porta and Vavra in a 56-23 conference win over St. Francis Jan. 14. Lauryn Swanson added 9 points and Abby Glozbach 6 in the home victory.

Warriors split two series

Jake Bergman scored 33 points to lead the Cambridge Christian boys over Spectrum 77-72 Jan. 10. Justin Roble turned in 18 points, with additional Warrior scoring coming from Grant Taylor (12) and Anders Boyum (11).

On Jan. 9, the Spectrum girls pulled away in the second half for a 48-33 win over CCS. Kristin Bergman scored 12 points, Karly Wiek 7, Emily Fridberg 6 and Kellie Pedersen 6 for the Warriors.

The CCS girls notched a 47-42 road win over North Metro on Jan. 13, paced by 20 points from Pedersen and 14 from Jerusalem Solomon. In the nightcap, the North Metro boys defeated the Warriors 83-68. Leading CCS that night were Bergman (27 points), Taylor (12), Roble (11) and Alex Moses (9).

Back on Jan. 9, the Warrior boys got past St. Cloud Christian 58-53. Roble (18), Bergman (17) and Taylor (10) were top scorers in the CAL victory.
