Cambridge-Isanti went 2-1 to place 3rd at Saturday’s Kiffmeyer Duals held at St. Cloud Tech, finishing the day with a 29-28 win over Foley who has held the No. 1 ranking in Class AA all season.
The Bluejackets, ranked 5th in Class AAA, led 18-6 after six matches against the Falcons, sprung by major decisions from Carlo Holmberg (14-5 at 106), Monty Fredriksen (11-2 at 120) and Travis Swanson (10-2 at 126). Brady Kuntz (113) and Reegan Lane (138) added decisions in that stretch. David Kent (7-4 at 160) and Cody Skog (14-6 major at 170) answered two match wins by Foley, and Kyle Chromy wrapped up the win with an 11-5 decision at 220.
C-I began the tourney with a 37-23 quarterfinal win over Albert Lea. Picking up pins against the Tigers were Swanson, Kent, Skog and Cody Binger at 220, with Jake Pasch adding a major at 182.
Hastings, ranked 4th in ‘AAA,’ got past the Bluejackets 33-29 in the semifinals. Skog and Chromy earned falls against the Raiders. Winning decisions were M. Fredriksen, Swanson (major) James Fredriksen (major), Pasch and Dakota Johnson at 195.
St. Michael-Albertville, ranked 3rd in AAA, defended its tourney title by beating Hastings 34-22 in the finals.
• On Jan. 9, the Bluejackets advanced to 3-0 in conference duals by defeating North Branch 43-27. Leading the way with falls were Casey Schlickenmayer (106), Kuntz (120), J. Fredriksen (138), Justin Rosnow (170), Johnson (195) and Chromy (220).
• This weekend, the Bluejacket wrestlers will be hosting their first “Takedown Cancer” fundraiser for Randy Shaver’s cancer research foundation at three events. Friday will be ‘AA’ 12th-ranked Chisago Lakes coming to town (also “Teacher Appreciation Night”). Saturday is the Bluejacket Duals with the likes of top-ranked Wisconsin team Ellsworth, Forest Lake and Perham in the mix. Sunday is the Rum River Youth Open tourney for grades K-6 at CIHS.
