BASKETBALL UPDATES:  Blaine opened up a late 10-point lead and held on to defeat visiting Cambridge-Isanti girls basketball 61-55 in a matchup of Section 7AAAA rivals on Saturday.

Justine Larson hit five field goals and was 5-for-5 at the line to lead the Bluejackets with 15 points against the Bengals. Maria Vavra was next in scoring with 12 points, with Lily Porta (9), Lauryn Swanson (8) and Marsha Porta (5) adding key points for C-I. M. Porta and Larson led on the boards with six and five rebounds. Swiping three steals each were Sydney Larkin, L. Porta and Swanson.

Mississippi 8 Girls Basketball: East: Chisago Lakes 7-1 all; North Branch 7-2; Cambridge-Isanti 4-5; Princeton 3-3; St. Francis 3-5.  West: Monticello 8-3; St. Michael-Alb. 6-2; Rogers 6-3; Buffalo 5-4; Big Lake 3-6.

 

Andover beats  C-I Boys

After the teams were knotted at 32-all in the first half, host Andover pulled away in the second 18 minutes for a 78-62 win over Section 7AAAA boys basketball partner Cambridge-Isanti on Jan. 3.

Pacing the Bluejackets against the Huskies were Kyle McDonald (14 points), Nate Cox (13), Matt Swanson (13), Devin Malik (9) and Jake Johnson (7).

• C-I hoops’ Jan. 7 games with Chisago Lakes were postponed due to the school closures. The Jacket boys will make up their game at Lindstrom on Feb. 15 (changed to 3 p.m. matinee).

Bombers sweep Dragons

Braham boys basketball handed visiting Pine City its first Great River loss on the season in a 73-29 victory Jan. 3. Scoring in double digits for the Bombers were John Larson (18), Chris Olson (15), Zach Dahlman (14) and Alec Olson (10).

That same night, the Bomber girls held down the Dragons 63-13. Kayla Nickles and Jenna Winters led the way with 17 and 14 points for Braham, with Jaclyn Hollenkamp (11), Lizzie Altendorf (10), and Natalie Bacon (6) adding more key points against PC.
