East Central Minnesota Grad Band winter concert

The East Central Minnesota Grad Band, based in Cambridge, will hold its annual winter concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.

The concert will be held at Cambridge Middle School, 31374 Xylite St. NE, Cambridge. The theme for this concert is “A Grand Grad Christmas.” Significantly, this is the 25th annual Christmas concert. While the first concert was with 13 band members, seven of those are still with the band.

The band has 52 members ranging in age from 15 to 78 (obviously not everybody is a grad). Members come from the East Central Minnesota area, ranging from Rush City, Braham, Harris, and North Branch, to Ham Lake, Blaine and Brooklyn Park. Many members come from the Isanti and Cambridge area. The band includes several band directors, both active and retired.

“A Grand Grad Christmas” concert will present a variety of music. For example, music will include the traditional Christmas music such as “Away in a Manger” and “Silver Bells,” more classical music such as “O Nata Lux” and “Midnight Sleighride” which is based on Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite.” A jazzy version of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and of course the latino “Feliz Navidad” will be played. One piece is from the operetta “Babes in Toyland” titled “March of the Toys.” Another piece is a medley of traditional Christmas carols, “Christmas Day.”

Following the holidays, the Grad Band will resume rehearsals on Sunday evenings beginning the first Sunday in February. Interested adults are encouraged to inquire.
