Minnesota Law requires new homeowners to apply for the homestead classification. If you purchased and occupied a home in 2013 by Dec. 1, you are eligible for the homestead classification for real estate taxes payable in 2014.
If you own a property that has been non-homestead and is now occupied by an immediate relative, that property could be eligible for the Relative Homestead Classification.
If you have not applied for the homestead classification or feel your property qualifies for the relative homestead classification, you must apply no later than Dec. 15 at the Assessor’s Office.
Homestead notices are no longer sent on an annual basis. Once you apply for homestead, it will continue until the status changes. Relative homesteads will be sent a new application in April of each year.
If the homestead status should change, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to notify the Assessor’s Office within 30 days.
