Cambridge-Isanti senior Matt Swanson will bring his tough golf game west next school year after he signed on with Div. I University of South Dakota on Nov. 13.
Swanson, who will be a six-year varsity golf member this spring for the Bluejackets, earned trips to the past two Class AAA State Golf Tournaments. He additionally honed his game on the top-level Minnesota PGA Juniors Players Tour where he finished 1st at a July tourney in Stillwater and played in the Minnesota State Open.
“Matt works really hard on his golf game– always the last one out there chipping or putting,” said C-I boys golf coach Mike Hennen at the signing ceremony. “He benefitted from older golfers on our team when he was younger, and now he is a great leader for us since he has matured into a young man.”
Swanson was recruited by USD head coach Nick Hovden to join the Coyotes’ roster which has six Minnesotans on it this fall, including Jordan Rykal from C-I’s conference rival Rogers.
“I think my short game and distance will help out a lot next year,” said Swanson when asked what he will bring to the Coyotes. “South Dakota has mainly a young team right now, but they had a good fall season. They play in the Summit League but also go down to Texas and California for early spring tournaments.”
Swanson also played Bluejacket football this past autumn and is on the Bluejacket boys basketball squad this winter.
