SPORTS ROUND-UP: The local high school winter sports season officially began Saturday afternoon when the Cambridge-Isanti-Mora-Pine City girls hockey squad traveled to Duluth for the opener. The section partner Northern Stars slipped past the Bluejackets 3-2 on the Heritage Sports Center ice.
Senior captain Jordan Ramey had CIMPC up 1-0 with a first-period goal off assists from Maria Carpenter and Jennifer Phillips. That lead stood until five minutes into the second period when Duluth scored.
Ramey’s second goal later in the period off an Ally Erickson pass again had the Jackets ahead. But the Northern Stars scored twice within 20 seconds late in the second for the winning difference.
The Bluejackets had one late power play advantage in the third period turned away by Duluth. In the CIMPC nets, Meghan Thomas made 24 saves.
The Bluejackets’ next action will be Nov. 16 with the home opener against North Wright County (7 p.m.). The Buffalo girls invade the Isanti Arena Tuesday, Nov. 19 (7 p.m.) as the Mississippi 8 season continues.
