C-I Swim & Dive wraps up season at sections

The Cambridge-Isanti girls swimming & diving squad wrapped up the local fall sports season with several strong placings at last weekend’s Section 7AA prelims and finals hosted at the Northdale pool in Coon Rapids.

Junior Taylor Weeks finished a great diving season for the Bluejackets by placing 5th at the Section 7AA meet on Friday night.

Junior Taylor Weeks finished a great diving season for the Bluejackets by placing 5th at the Section 7AA meet on Friday night.

The top placing for the Bluejackets came in the first event at Saturday’s finals when the 200 Medley Relay of Katie Beauto, Paige Thomas, Brooke Olson and Maria Vavra swam to a season-best 1:59.8, good for 4th place. Beauto, a senior, continued to rack up points for the Jackets when she placed 6th in the 100 Backstroke (1:05.1) and was 9th in the 100 Butterfly (1:04.6).

Fellow senior Paige Thomas set a personal-best time of 1:14.8 to place 10th in the 100 Breaststroke. More significant time-drops turned in by the Jackets came from Megan Scheiller in the Breaststroke (1:18.0, 15th), Kenzie Boysen in the 500 Freestyle (5:51.4, 14th), Olson in the 50 Free (26.5, 6th) and Nicole Peterson in the 50 Free (27.4, 14th).

Junior Taylor Weeks just missed a State berth in Diving when she placed 5th with 328.5 points (top four divers advance). Unfortunately, senior Maria Leibel, who reached State last season, had to sit out sections due to a concussion. Junior Michaela Pasch was 10th in Diving (284.7), and freshman Pamela Coranado was 19th.

More Bluejacket top-18 placers at the Section 7AA meet: Boysen 12th (2:09.9) and Tristen Dooley 18th (2:13.1) in the 200 Free; Thomas 17th in the 200 IM (2:34.6); Lillian Truebenbach 18th (1:10.3) and Elizabeth Berry 19th (1:10.8) in the 100 Butterfly; Vavra 16th (1:00.1); Peterson 17th (1:00.1) in the 100 Free; 200 Free Relay of Olson, Vavra, Peterson & Boysen 8th (1:47.0); 400 Free Relay of Olson, Vavra, Beauto & Boysen 7th (3;57.9).

“And then probably the best highlight of the meet was that the CIHS girls received the ‘7AA Section Academic Champions’ award with a gold level GPA, showing that our girls not only work hard in the pool but excel academically, as well,” noted C-I assistant/diving coach Diane Solbrack. “The team ended up in 8th place in the final standings, but there were several great swims and dives by our girls. They are such a great group of student-athletes that showed dedication and great team spirit throughout the season. All of us coaches (including Jen Olson and Gary Gotz) were very proud of them.”

Section 7AA Swim & Dive Finals: Blaine 424, Anoka 326, Andover 318, Duluth East 238.5, Forest Lake 234, Champlin Park 224, Coon Rapids 186, Cambridge-Isanti 152.5.
