Cambridge Christian capped off a fantastic 20-1 season by winning its first Christian Athletic League volleyball tournament hosted Oct. 25-26 on the Cambridge AFRC court.

The Warriors opened the tourney with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Hope Christian Friday morning. Karly Wiek led the team with 12 points in that match. More Warrior stats from Match 1: Kristin Bergman – 9 points, 9 kills, 7 aces; Kellie Pedersen – 9 points, 5 kills; Amelia Cole – 9 points; Kim Walburg – 19 assists.

That night, CCS won its second pool play match by downing Immanuel Lutheran 25-19, 25-18, 25-21. Kristin Bergman (9), Nicole Cegla (6) and Kellie Pedersen (5) led in kills. Coach Newton: “Our semifinal game vs. Immanuel Lutheran from Mankato was harder, especially because Karly Wiek (one of the starting middles) fell and sprained her ankle in the second game. Stats vs. Immanuel: Kristin Bergman – 11 points, 9 kills; Amelia Cole – 8 points, 3 aces; Kellie Pedersen – 5 kills; Nicole Cegla – 6 kills.

The tournament wrapped up with top-seed CCS facing No. 2 seed Faith Foreston in the afternoon finals. The Warriors claimed the championship with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 sweep.

“From the outset, we had confidence and played our game, strategically place serving and playing scrappy defense and aggressive net play.  This is definitely one of the best teams I’ve coached. They worked hard to win as a TEAM and have played such smart volleyball all year. What an amazing ending to the season and a well-deserved finish for a fantastic team!” exclaimed Warrior Coach Rachel Newton.
