Brainerd broke a 14-14 tie in the third quarter with 21 unanswered points to defeat Cambridge-Isanti 35-14 in the Section 7AAAAA football semifinals on Oct. 26.
The No. 1 seed Warriors (9-0) will host No. 2 Chisago Lakes (8-1) in the Nov. 1 finals; the Wildcats snuck past No. 3 Bemidji 35-28 in their semifinal game.
At Brainerd on Saturday, the Bluejackets struck first when Hunter Vavra burst away on a 35-yard scoring run, with Josh Samsa adding the extra point for the 7-0 edge. The Warriors scored on their last two possessions of the first half on a 4-yard run and 30-yard pass play to lead 14-7 at the break.
The Jackets fought back to tie the game with a drive midway through the third quarter and capped by Kyle Chromy bulling in from the 5 yard line. But just 28 seconds later, Brainerd’s Logan Davis tore off a 70-yard scoring run to retake the lead for good. Davis finished with a game-high 127 rushing yards.
Brainerd’s final points came off a 6-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 9-yard TD run with 3:48 to play. The Bluejackets closed the 2013 season with a 6-4 record.
