‘Try Hockey for Free Day’ Nov. 2 at Isanti Arena

COMMUNITY SPORTS: The Cambridge Isanti Hockey Hockey Association invites boys and girls ages four to nine years old to David C. Johnson Arena in Isanti on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m. for a “Try Hockey for Free” clinic to experience ice hockey for the first time and learn the basics of the sport in a fun, safe environment.

The Try Hockey For Free Day is part of “Come Play Hockey Month.” This program, designed to provide youth hockey associations a national platform to introduce new kids to the sport, is a joint effort between USA Hockey, the National Hockey League, and NHL member clubs. With Total Hockey and Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports, the official sponsors of Try Hockey For Free Day, USA Hockey has 500 locations offering kids this unique opportunity. All you need to participate is a helmet (can be a bike), skates & gloves (can be winter gloves), and a light jacket might be good. If needed, there is a limited amount of skates available at the rink to borrow.

To register, please go to http://www.tryhockeyforfree.com/ and type in your zip code in the locate space.  Once there, click on the red marker on the map which will bring you to the registration page.

Local author scores with book launch at Minnesota Wild hockey game

If there’s one thing about Hockey Moms, it’s that they have stories. So says Cambridge’s Jody Anderson, author of the upcoming book, Hockey Moms Aren’t Crazy. Anderson’s “fun little project” has turned into a dream come true, thanks in large part to the Minnesota Wild, who are hosting her book party at a game on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Discounted tickets for the game and book signing are available now. Simply visit BigPondBooks.com and click the “Wild Game/Book Party Tickets” link. That will take you to a Ticketmaster page. There, enter the offer code “wild” to get tickets for only $30 to $60. Plus, those prices include an autographed copy of Anderson’s book, which you can pick up in the Suite Hospitality room at a meet & greet before the game.

As for the book itself, it’s a tribute to Hockey Moms in the form of jokes, comical illustrations and stories collected from Hockey Moms and hockey pros. There’s even a contribution from famed “Miracle on Ice” great, Mike Eruzione.

You can also meet the author locally, at her book signing events. She will be at Scout & Morgan, on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m., and at Wolcyn Tree Farms & Nursery, on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. Hockey Moms Aren’t Crazy will be available on Nov. 1 at area bookstores and gift shops, through online retailers, by visiting AdventurePublications.net or by calling 800-678-7006.
