St. Francis surprised with an onside kick on the opening kickoff, scored off that possession and kept the lead throughout the night to defeat Cambridge-Isanti 27-18 at the Bluejackets’ Homecoming game Sept. 20.

Senior back Max Gust had a huge night for the Saints, rushing for 158 yards and three touchdowns. His last score with 2:07 had the Saints up 27-12.

C-I safety John Solberg returned an interception 40 yards for a score which made it 14-12 at the half. Solberg also broke off a 51-yard run which set up his 5-yard TD with 1:05 to go, but the Saints covered the Jackets’ onside attempt.

Hunter Vavra led the C-I rushing attack with 110 yards on 15 carries. Kyle Chromy added 41 rushing yards and scored C-I’s first touchdown on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Cambridge-Isanti is now 3-1 on the season (1-1 in Mississippi 8 Blue Division games).  St. Francis is 2-2 (1-2 in M-8 Blue games).
