This Friday’s Bluejacket football Homecoming game revives the rivalry with St. Francis in what should be a hard-fought Mississippi 8 battle. The Saints are 1-2 coming in, but they put up a good fight in losses to St. Michael-Albertville and Rogers the past two weeks.
“The Saints are very good. They have two runningbacks in Max Gust and John Santiago who are really fast and shifty, a 6’6” tight end in Blake Moreno, a 6’8” wide receiver in Jake Johnson, and 6’3” wide receiver in Dylan Schroeder who are very tall and athletic basketball players. Couple that with a physical offensive line, and they can put up some points on the board,” scouted C-I Coach Mike Hennen.
Coach Hennen’s Bluejackets are coming off a 33-6 road victory at North Branch Sept. 13. After fullback Kyle Chromy opened the scoring on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, it was a night of big plays for the C-I boys. Quarterback John Solberg sprinted 93 yards for the next strike. After the Vikings got on the board with a rushing TD, halfback Hunter Vavra broke off a 62-yard scoring run to make it 19-6 at the half.
Flanker Matt Kuehn kept up the pace with a 79-yard TD run to start the second half. Max Knowlton capped the scoring on a 2-yard run with 1:32 to go in the third quarter. The Bluejacket defense racked up 10 tackles-for-losses, two each coming from Darren DeBaere and Vavra.
