C-I Tennis 2-0 at own triangular

SPORTS ROUND-UP:   The Cambridge-Isanti girls tennis squad swept its two matches to win its own Bluejacket  Triangular on Saturday.

The Jackets opened with a 4-3 win over Anoka, stacking up singles wins from Jade Newman (6-0, 6-0), Nikki Hallstrom (6-1, 6-1) and Karley Kirkhoff (6-4, 6-2). Adding the key last team point was the 2nd Doubles pairing of Emily Baker & Anna Nelson (6-1, 6-3).

The Bluejackets followed with a 7-0 win over St. Paul Harding. Taking their singles matches were Newman (6-0, 6-0), Kate Hanson (6-1, 6-0), Hallstrom (6-1, 6-1) and Kirkhoff (6-0, 6-1). Winning at doubles were Ellie Osborne & Lizzie Holm (1-6, 6-2, 10-4), Baker & Nelson (6-2, 6-1), and Abby Schoeneck & Tori Losel (6-1, 6-2).

“This win concluded a grueling five-match week for the girls where we went 4-1. I’m very proud of our  efforts,” commented C-I Coach Lee Orvik.

On Sept. 12, Mississippi 8 co-leader Chisago Lakes slipped past the Bluejackets 4-3. Hallstrom won 7–6, 6-0 at singles, with Baker & Jade Lamb (6-0, 7-5) and Schoeneck & Kosel (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) holding for wins in doubles.

The C-I girls faced the other conference leader, Monticello, on Sept. 17, and the Magic posted a 6-1 victory that afternoon.

C-I Girls Swim & Dive beats Wildcats

The Bluejackets improved to 2-0 in Mississippi dual meets after defeating host Chisago Lakes 105-81 Sept. 12. Katie Beauto swam the 100 Butterfly for the first time and went on to win with a 1:07.0 time. Beauto added a 1st place in the 200 IM (2:17.1).

Brooke Olson and Maria Vavra tied for 1st at 27.5  in the 50 Freestyle, and Paige Thomas won the 100 Breaststroke at 1:21.0. Taylor Weeks also shined in diving by eclipsing the 200-point mark for the first time (205.3), getting past teammate Maria Leibel (202.0) for 1st place off the board.

On Saturday, the Bluejackets placed 3rd at the Hibbing Invite with 343.5 points, placing behind Bemidji (463) and Grand Rapids (425) at the eight-team gathering. C-I’s top individual placings came from Beauto in the 100 Backstroke (1st) and the 200 IM (3rd), Leibel (3rd) and Weeks (4th) in diving, and Kenzie Boysen in the 200 Free (5th).

C-I Boys Cross  Country 2nd at Mora

Henry Boettcher placed 6th (18:18), Paden Hallman was 9th (18:35), and Paul Elmstrand was 15th (18:56)  when the C-I boys cross country was runner-up to host Mora at the Sept. 10 Mora Invite. Maddie Ouellette  (11th, 17:10) and Ashley Winselman (21st, 17:42)  led the C-I girls to a 5th place finish. Logan Leavey (19:00) and Rachel Eskuri (17:25) both placed 16th to lead Braham at the Mora Invite.

C-I Soccer updates

The Cambridge-Isanti boys soccer team earned a 5-2 win over visiting St. Michael-Albertville Sept. 12. The Bluejackets next dropped a 4-1 game to host Rogers Sept. 17.

The Bluejackets girls soccer squad fell in its last two Mississippi 8 matches: 2-0 to St. Michael-Albertville on Sept. 12 and 2-1 in overtime to Rogers Sept. 17.

The double-header at St. John’s Prep on Saturday, Sept. 21 has been moved up two hours. The C-I girls play SJP at 11 a.m., and the boys take on the Johnnies at 1 p.m.
