Train aficionado to present at Sept. 28 Northern Lights Writers meeting

Northern Lights Writers is pleased to announce that their September program titled “Romance on the Rails” will be presented by train expert Dennis Bartholow.

Bartholow has been into trains since the age of 6 when he and his friends used to hitch rides on trains in the Shorewood, Minn. area. His father was a model railroader and he taught Bartholow all about trains. Together they built a 27 foot by 23 foot model railroad in his father’s basement. He attended the National Model Railroading Association Conference in Philadelphia in 2006.

Traveling by train is definitely an enjoyable part of this hobby as Dennis has traveled on local and international trains — Minnesota Zephyr, Minneapolis Gopher, The 261, Amtrak using private classic Milwaukee cars, high speed European trains in Norway and Sweden, and the Minneapolis to Big Lake commuter train.

His knowledge of trains encompasses the types of trains used in the U.S. and internationally from the 1800s steam locomotives up to modern day high speed trains incorporating the people who worked on them and the people who rode on them. Bartholow even has ideas for romances on trains, so look out.

Trains have been featured in many movies — “The Polar Express,” “The Orient Express,” “Silver Streak,” “Cassandra Crossing,” “Holiday Inn,” “North by Northwest,” “Some Like it Hot,” “The Wild, Wild West,” “Iron Will” (filmed in Duluth) and “Unstoppable.” So if you’ve ever thought about using a train in one of your stories or just enjoy learning about this exciting travel option, you won’t want to miss this program.

The group’s Sept. 28 meeting will be held at the Wyoming Area Giese Memorial Library in Wyoming, beginning at 10 a.m. Join members for breakfast and lively writing-related conversation beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Village Inn in Wyoming.
