Warrior Soccer takes 3rd at Owatonna Tourney

SOCCER UPDATES FOR CCS, C-I:  Cambridge Christian went 1-2 to place 3rd at last weekend’s round-robin Owatonna Soccer Shootout. Warriors named to the All-Tourney team were senior captains midfielder Anders Boyum and keeper Grant Taylor, and senior defender Jake Bergman.

CCS opened with a 3-0 loss to eventual champions Southwestern Wisconsin Christian Homeschool Athletics Friday night. The next morning, the Warriors defeated long-time rival Christian Life 4-1 as David Fryc netted two goals, with solo goals scored by Syfah Doble and Boyum.

Playing for 2nd place in the final game against host Owatonna Christian, Boyum’s goal with 1:30 remaining in the first half had the Warriors ahead, but OCS rallied with two second-half goals for the 2-1 victory.

“The tournament was a great learning time for our team.  We played some very skilled opponents which helped to show us our weakness, sharpen our skills, and build our team chemistry,” commented CCS Coach Peter Newton. “We did many things right this weekend. We played excellent defense, and moved the ball well from the midfield up to our forwards.”

C-I Girls Soccer beats Vikings

Melissa Varsoke racked up three goals in the first 10 minutes when Cambridge-Isanti girls soccer defeated North Branch 7-1 Sept. 10. Adding solo goals for the Bluejackets were Lindsey Elmquist, Dante Lemon, Carolyn Galleazzi and Bailey Richards. Justine Larson (4 saves) and Ariel Kramer (3 saves) shared keeper duties against the Vikings.

“Our defense held up really well against a good attack. They held their line, made the correct shifts, marked up well against threats, and destroyed a number of attacks,” said C-I Coach Mike Galligan, whose team also fell to  2-1 on Sept. 5. “The midfield and wings put the ball into play very effectively up to the strikers.”

• The Cambridge-Isanti boys fell 3-1 to M-8 leader Chisago Lakes Sept. 5. Jake Harding was called on for 14 saves for the Jackets, and Joel Hieserich netted C-I’s goal off a Micah Brady assist.
