C-I Tennis tops Bulldogs

SPORTS ROUND-UP:  Cambridge-Isanti picked up its fifth win of the season by tipping Becker 4-3 in the Aug. 29 meeting between former Mississippi 8 partners. The Bluejackets swept the singles matches for the needed points, getting wins from Jade Newman (6-1, 7-5), Kate Hanson (6-1, 6-1), Nikki Hallstrom (6-0, 6-4), and Karley Kirkhoff (6-2, 6-0).

On Sept. 3, the Bluejackets (5-2 overall) fell 4-3 to St. Michael-Albertville in the M-8 Conference opener. Taking matches for C-I were Newman (6-2, 6-3), Hallstrom (6-0, 6-3), and Emily Baker & Jade Lamb at 2nd Doubles (6-2, 4-6, 6-0).

Jacket Swimmers win Tiger Relays

Cambridge-Isanti placed 1st in seven of nine varsity events and won all JV events at the Aug. 29 Princeton Relays. Maria Leibel was the top diver at the annual season kick-off. Katie Beauto, Paige Thomas, Brooke Olson and Maria Vavra posted a win at 2:04.6 in the 200 Medley Relay. Tristan Dooley, Nicole Peterson and Mackenzie Boysen teamed for a win by 30 seconds in the 3×200 Freestyle Relay. The Bluejackets wrapped up the night with Thomas, Megan Scheiller and Laura Meier winning the 3×100 Breaststroke by six seconds.

The Bluejackets opened the 2013 with a 95-90 loss to Champlin Park Aug. 27.

C-I Girls Soccer defeats Eagles

Cambridge-Isanti girls soccer earned a thrilling 2-1 win over St. Cloud Apollo Aug. 30. Melyssa Varsoke scored early off a Megan Dawson corner kick, but the Eagles tied it on a penalty kick with less than a minute left in regulation. As the 10-second countdown began, the Bluejackets found an answer.

Replayed Coach Mike Galligan, “Lindsey Elmquist crossed in a ball from the left wing, right wing Cassie Galligan charged the far post and got a left foot on the ball that rebounded off the cross bar. Striker Jordyn Galeazzi, positioned in the center, one-touched the ball into the net to score as the time ran down to just three seconds left on the clock.”

The Bluejackets are 3-2 overall after defeating Rockford 2-0 Sept. 3.

• After starting with three losses, C-I Boys Soccer rolled back with a 3-2 win over St. John’s Prep Aug. 30 and an 8-0 win at Rockford Sept. 3.
