Cambridge-Isanti football kept the hammer down on Duluth Denfeld to post a 34-0 shutout in the Aug. 29 home-opener. The win got the Bluejackets off to a 1-0 start in the Mississippi 8 Conference.
The game began with the C-I crowd hearing big hits on the opening kickoff coverage (photo at right). The Hunters tore off two long runs for first downs, but Max Knowlton recovered a botched pitch to stop the visitors.
The Jacket offense was stopped on a fourth-down run on that chance, but Hunter Vavra forced a fumble on Denfeld’s ill-fated fourth-down attempt on the ensuing possession. This time, the Jackets took advantage of the short field when Vavra broke off two good runs to set up Max Knowlton’s untouched one-yard sweep into the end zone.
A Vavra sack and a Spencer Simon tackle-for-loss ended the Hunters’ next series in three plays. The Bluejackets made it 14-0 when John Solberg connected with Knowlton on a 20-yard pass with 1:14 left in the half.
Vavra sprinted 20 yards for the Jackets’ third TD late in the third quarter, then he made it 28-0 on a 2-yard run on the team’s next possession. The senior got the hat trick by scoring off a blocked punt two minutes later. The Jacket defense continued to swarm well to limit the Hunters to five total first downs.
“We played physical, unselfish defense which is a trademark of Bluejacket Football. Our special teams blocked a punt and finished with a scoop & a score,” said C-I Coach Mike Hennen. “It was a great team win as every member of the team contributed in the effort.”
• Next up: The Bluejackets travel to Duluth East Sept. 6. The Greyhounds were defeated 64-12 by St. Francis last week.
