“Urinetown” has been described as one of the funniest musicals of the last 20 years. The musical will be performed July 26 and July 27 at 7 p.m. and July 28 at 3 p.m. at the Richard G. Hardy Performing Arts Center at Cambridge-Isanti High School.

The cast of  Play Inc’s Summer Youth Theatre describe it as “The “Hunger Games meets “Les Miserables” instilled with humor. “Urinetown” satirizes the legal system, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as “Les Miserables,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “West Side Story,” and the Broadway musical itself as a form.

The rebels strike a choral pose and take a break from dancing in “Run, Freedom, Run.”

Set in the future, “Urinetown” takes place while a 20-year drought has made the water level so low that private bathrooms have been outlawed, and the  people must pay a fee for the “privilege to pee.”

These public amenities are run by a ruthless, greedy corporation who use their financial position to influence politics.  Among the downtrodden poor is one man, Bobby Strong, who will lead the uprising and free the people. Not the stuff of a comedy? Remember the show is called “Urinetown,” and could any show with that title be taken seriously?

“Urinetown” director, Aaron Knudsvig, promises a hilarious evening and the only regret you’ll have is if you miss this production.

Tickets are available at www.showtix4u.com and will also be available at the door.
