Isanti County Fair Schedule July 24-28

See detailed Schedule of Events at end of article

The 136th Annual Isanti County Fair runs Wednesday, July 24, through Sunday, July 28, and with a theme of “Oktoberfest in July,” this year’s fair is packed full of education, cultural events and traditions.

Wednesday, July 24

The Fair opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday with “Military Appreciation Day,” and all military service members and veterans will receive free admission. Opening ceremonies and flag raising will begin at 6 p.m. at the Legion building, and all rides on the Midway will be $1.

Thursday, July 25

On Thursday, all seniors 62 and older will receive discounted gate admission with the Seniors Day Program beginning at 1 p.m. The program will feature “Down Home,” Sac’s Red Hatters and Outstanding Seniors awards and will be followed by the Elk River German Band, performing folk songs and polkas in the band shell. Fair visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional German dinner, which will be served at the band shell for those who want to try an authentic taste of the Old World. They also can participate in a German chocolate cake contest sponsored by the Open Class Department.

Friday, July 26

Kid’s Day Events will begin on Friday at 8:30 a.m. with free games, activities, contests, prizes, a Lego Creation Competition and a Pedal Tractor Pull for the kids.

Saturday, July 27

On Saturday, the Concord Singers along with Narren from New Ulm, Minn., and the Edelweiss Dancers of St. Paul, will be performing authentic German selections and traditional dance.

You will not want to miss this opportunity to experience the Concord Singers’ extensive repertoire of current and traditional German popular standards and “Volksweise.” Traveling with the Concord Singers will be Narren, which consists of characters, like jesters, in traditional German wooden masks and colorful costumes.

Narren attends festivities where merrymaking and dancing take place, getting the crowd involved, leading snake dances and having fun. Also on Saturday, the Edelweiss Dancers from St. Paul will perform and promote history, bringing to life the folk dances that originated in Austria and Germany.

Sunday, July 28

Sunday will bring back the Isanti County Fair classic car show along with the famous Burn Out competition and the talent contest, The Nieghberz Band, Cowboy Church Service and more.

Featured entertainment

Band shell entertainment includes the Vulkan Band performing ’80s rock on Wednesday and the Mystery Mountain Boys with bluegrass on Thursday evening. Friday night will bring the return of the Chris Brooks Band and the Shaw Brothers Band on Saturday, providing great dance music.

If motor sports are your interest, there will be great grandstand events each night, starting with Wednesday and Thursday, admitting children 12 and under free to the grandstand with a paid adult.

The Moto-Cross will start the action on Wednesday night, and Thursday evening will be the “Night of Destruction” including a Spectator Drag Race for fair visitors. Participants will bring their own personal vehicles and race one lap around the Isanti County Fair Racetrack for cash and a trophy. There will also be a Street Survivor Race, Chain Race, Appliance Races, Dukes of Hazard Jump and death-defying stunts by “Wildman” Clay Gallagher. A highlight of the night will again be the Figure 8 Trailer Races.

The annual Isanti County Fair tractor pull will be held on Friday, with the demo derby on Saturday, featuring both compact and full-size cars and trucks along with the addition of two pro-stock heats for Full-Size Cars and Compact Trucks and Mini-vans.

If you are looking for something new and completely different, Michael Griffen, “America’s Escape Hero,” featured on “America’s Got Talent,” “Ripley’s Believe it or Not,”  multiple episodes of “Masters of Illusion,” and a is a two-time winner of the World Magic Awards, will perform several times daily throughout the week. Also planned on Friday and Saturday are performances of Griffen escaping from the fairgrounds pond after being chained to a cinder block and submerged in 10 feet of water.
