C-I 16U fastpitch competes at State

The Cambridge-Isanti 16-Under fastpitch softball team went 2-2 at the July 13-14 qualifying weekend and 2-2 at State hosted last weekend in Ham Lake. The team, coached by Dave Hanson, finished the summer 21-14-1 at the “A” level.

C-I opened State with a 2-1 nail-biter win over Minnesota Force White. Maria Vavra opened the scoring with a solo home run to left center. Late in the game Sydney Larkin doubled to deep left to score Kayla Bowker with the winning run. Kate Hanson pitched the seven-inning complete game.

In  Game 2, Cambridge-Isanti built a 4-1 lead before the Inferno  fired back to knot the game at 4-4 at the end of the 80 minute time regulation. The Bluejackets plated two runs under international rules on RBIs by Larkin and Anesia King to win 6-4. Hanson picked up the win in relief.

Game 3 on Saturday saw the Jackets fall to OMGAA 5-3.   Josie Potrament celebrated her birthday with two doubles, but the defense and the rest of the offense had a few miscues in the setback. Hanson pitched six innings and took the loss.

Sunday morning closed the girls’ summer season with a 6-2  loss to Hastings. Once again, not enough offense and some costly errors defensively made for a bad recipe. Breea Longley started and took the loss for the Jackets.

• Another Cambridge-Isanti 16U fastpitch team also competed at State, going 0-2 at North St. Paul.
