Handling the bit of rain that came down Sunday, the 18th annual Cambridge Classic slowpitch softball tournament was another success as it drew a competitive cross-section of teams from around Minnesota.

The tourney ran June 7-9 at Sandquist Park, receiving mild weather Friday night and all day Saturday to keep on schedule. As play progressed into Sunday afternoon, it was Innovative Basement out of Pine City defeating Brother’s Cutters of South St. Paul 26-21 to win the men’s championship.

The women’s tourney title went to the Brainerd Explosion who defeated the Wanderoos Lions Club of Amery, Wisc. in the finals. Wanderoos handled local squad Pine Brook Inn in the 3rd-place game to reach the championship. The Jailbirds won the women’s consolation bracket.

Left fielder Jeff Hollister of CJ’s of Palmdale let loose a perfect throw home to gun out a tagging runner, receiving a little love from his catcher, when CJ’s beat tough VanHouse Construction of Silver Bay in their Classic opener.

CIASA leaders Duke Weisbrod and Tom Smith, along with their umpiring & work crews, ran another enjoyable tourney. Next big tourneys on the calendar at Sandquist Park are the June 22-23 Cambridge Men’s Church Invite and the July 13-14 MSF/NSF Ed Oliver National/State Qualifier.
