Three area golfers advance to State

Cambridge-Isanti’s Matt Swanson and Braham girls Caitlin Richmond & Ali Anderson kept their high school golfing seasons alive by earning berths in next week’s State tourneys.

On Day 2 at the Section 7AAA Finals at Grand National GC, Swanson moved up eight spots by shooting a 1-under 35 over the final nine holes to  tie for 4th place in the boys standings. closing with a 73. Also golfing for the C-I boys was Nate Cox who shot an 83. Forest Lake held off Grand Rapids by 12 strokes to defend the 7AAA boys title.

“I am very proud of the way Matt handled himself. His day started with a double bogey on his first hole. But with Matt’s confidence paired with his unbelievable golf game, he came back to play the next 17 holes at 1-under par,” said C-I coach Mike Hennen. Swanson will join the Class AAA boys at Bunker Hills GC in Coon Rapids for the June 11-12 State tourney.

At Greenhaven GC in Anoka May 30-31, Richmond earned a return trip to State with rounds of 94 and 96 in the Section 4A girls championship. Anderson snared the final individual spot at sections with rounds of 109 and 103. Those two head to the Class A Girls Tourney June 11-12 at Pebble Creek GC in Becker.

• In the Section 4A boys finals at Victory Links GC, Braham’s Quinn Richmond fired rounds of 80 and 85, and Dylan Altendorf came in with a 76-91 two-day total to finish their seasons.The Bomber boys were 4th in the team standings as Legacy Christian swept both titles.

• The Bluejacket girls were represented at Day 2 of the Section 7AAA meet by Jade Newman and Anna Sunderman. Both shot 86s on Grand National as Newman finished in 11th place and Sunderman 15th in the final standings. Andover earned its first State team berth by a large margin over Forest Lake and Grand Rapids.
