Bluejacket Softball splits with Rogers

SPORTS ROUND-UP:  Cambridge-Isanti softball is picking up momentum after the slow start to get in games this season. On May 7, the Bluejackets split a double-header with Rogers in Mississippi 8 action.

The Royals took Game 1 8-1 to defeat C-I pitcher Jessica Golden, who had the team’s lone RBI. Amanda Hanson went 2-for-4 to lead the Jackets.

Game 2 saw the Bluejackets winning 3-0. Freshman Kate Hanson fired a 2-hit shutout to pick up the win for the Bluejackets with 5 strikeouts. The big hits were firs-inning singles by Sydney Larkin, Brittni Peterson, and Kendall Sandberg and a 2-run double by Abby Glotzbach to stake the Jackets to the early 3-0 lead.

• On May 2, host St. Michael-Albertville swept a double-header with the Bluejackets 7-1 and 8-3. A. Hanson had 2 hits in Game 1, with Ronni Risch pitching for the Jackets. Game 2 saw Josie Potrament belt a run-scoring triple in the first, and Casey Johnsoy plated a run in the second on a bases-loaded walk. The Knights took control with two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

• Back on April 30, the Jackets salvaged a double-header at Buffalo by winning Game 2 10-8. The dramatic seventh-inning rally began with walks to Larkin, Maria Vavra, and a scratch infield single by A. Hanson. Sandberg and Erica Epsen delivered base hits to give the Bluejackets a lead at 9-8.  Potrament came through with an insurance run when she hit a hard smash to first that caromed off of the Bison first baseman and plated Sandberg.  Risch pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the win and tamed the Buffalo bats.

C-I Tennis defeats Big Lake

The Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis squad picked up a big 5-2 win over Big Lake May 2 in a Mississippi 8 match.

Posting wins at Singles for the Jackets were Thomas Phillips at No. 3 (6-7, 6-4, 6-2) and Jay Gislason (6-2, 4-6, 6-2). Sweeping at Doubles were Josh Fredlund & Derek Belford (5-7, 8-6, 6-4), Carlo Holmberg & Rafi Hernando (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), and Winston Waligora & Sam Walz (6-2, 4-6, 6-1).

“We had five  three-set matches and we won every one of them!  Before this match, we had dropped a few close three-set matches, but we knew that with experience the guys would learn to fight through those close ones,” commented C-I Coach Thea Lowman. “Pulling out all five of the three-setters shows their tenacity, work ethic, and that improvement has taken place over the last couple of weeks.”

• On May 7, host Buffalo held tough for a 7-0 win over the Bluejackets in another M-8 match.

Coach Linda Droubie: “We had several great performances Tuesday night. We had many girls who PR’d in their events and continue to make significant gains.  Paige Muehlhauser is close to breaking her own school record in the 400, and Kylie Baas continues to dominate in the high jump.  This was her best meet yet, this season. The key is to get all of these athletes to peak at the right time.”
