Margaret Jean (Kalenda) Sandberg

SandbergMargaretMargaret Jean (Kalenda) Sandberg, 99, of Cambridge formerly of Crown, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at GracePointe Crossing Gables East.

She was born Jan. 10, 1914 in Crystal, N.D. to John and Laura (Miller) Hoffman. In March 1920, her family moved to Spencer Brook in Isanti County where they lived for many years. Margaret was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Crown. She attended country school, and after her schooling Margaret moved to Minneapolis to work at a dime store. It was in Minneapolis that she met Leo Kalenda,

On June 12, 1937 she was united in marriage to Leo Kalenda and they made their home in Minneapolis. While in Minneapolis their two sons, Keith and Robert were born. In 1950 the family moved to the Hoffman family farm and made it their home.

On Nov. 13, 1966, Leo passed away and Margaret remained at the farm. She would later meet Walfred Sandberg and they married Nov. 3, 1973. Walfred sold his farm and the couple lived at Margaret’s home farm. Walfred passed away April 10, 1996. In 1999, Margaret would into Ashland Place in Cambridge. The past number of years she was a resident at GracePointe Crossing Gables East.

Margaret was a longtime active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Crown. She worked for seven years on Project Teach at the Cambridge State Hospital. She also volunteered for a number of years at the Cambridge Health Care Center/GracePointe Crossing Gables East and received an award for her volunteer work. Margaret enjoyed sewing, embroidery and canning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two husbands. Margaret is survived by her sons Keith Kalenda of Shoreview, and Robert and wife Caren Kalenda of St. Cloud, grandchildren Kris Kalenda and husband David Anderson, John Kalenda, Kim Kalenda, Renae Jones, Julie (Tom) Lynch, Mike Gehl, Paul Gehl, great grandchildren Travis, Vanessa, Tommy and Emily, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

A very special thank you to the staff at GracePointe Crossing Gables East for their wonderful care of Margaret over the years.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Crown with Rev. Donald Polege officiating.  Organist is Lou Sturm. Pallbearers are Kris Kalenda, John Kalenda, David Anderson, Tom Lynch, Mike Gehl and Travis Jones.  Interment is in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Carlson-Lillemoen Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Cambridge.
