Bomber boys seeded 3rd for 7AA defense

Braham boys basketball (24-2) was seeded in the No. 3 slot in the Section 7AA South Subsection for this week’s playoffs. The Bombers will host South No. 6 Rush City (13-9) in the Wednesday, March 6 opening round (7 p.m.) as they begin defense of their 7AA title.

The winner of that game will face either No. 2 Esko (22-4) or No. 7 Aitkin (8-17) in the Saturday, March 9 quarterfinals at UMD (1 p.m.). The potential battle with the Eskomos would be a rematch of last season’s section finals game. Also in that half of the brackets is North No. 1 Virginia (20-6).

Mora (21-5) is the No. 1 South seed in the other half of the brackets. The North No. 2 seed is International Falls (22-4) and No. 3 is Deer River (18-8). Semifinal games will be 6 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at UMD, with the championship scheduled for Saturday, March 16 (7 p.m.) back at the UMD gym.

• The Bombers paid back an earlier loss to Pierz at the Crusader Holiday Tourney when they defeated the host Pioneers 84-73 in the March 1 regular-season finale. Braham jumped out to a 40-28 lead at halftime and was led by Zach Dahlman working for 22 points, 9 rebounds (5 on offense) and 4 steals.

Shaun Hollenkamp added 18 points while hitting four three-pointers. Sam Stigen paced the offense with 14 points and contributed 9 points. More Bomber scoring came from Connor Tschumper (14, plus 8 rebounds), John Larson (13, with 6 rebounds) and Chris Olson (8). Overall, the Bombers nailed 11-of-27 three-pointers and racked up 29 assists at Pierz.
