Cambridge-Isanti (7-19) was seeded No. 6 for the Section 7AAAA boys basketball playoffs which kick off this week. The Bluejackets will open the quarterfinals at No. 3 Forest Lake (10-16) on Thursday, March 7 (7 p.m.).
The Rangers feature 6’6” senior center Noah Davis (20.7 ppg); the team’s second-leading scorer is junior guard Matt Degendorfer (11.7 ppg). The Bluejackets will counter with their balanced scoring lineup led by sophomore guard Kyle McDonald (13.7 ppg), soph guard Nate Cox (10.1 ppg), junior forward Matt Swanson (9.7 ppg), senior guard Aaron Allen (8.8 ppg) and junior forward Hunter Vavra (7.1 ppg).
The winner will face either No. 2 Duluth East (14-12) or No. 7 Anoka (3-22) in the Monday, March 11 semifinals at North Branch (8 p.m.). St. Francis (17-9) is the No. 1 seed in 7AAAA and received a first-round bye in the other half of the brackets. The Saints get either No. 4 Andover (7-19) or No. 5 Blaine (7-19) in the semifinals. The Section 7AAAA championship will be Friday, March 15 (7 p.m.) back at North Branch.
• St. Michael-Albertville forged a tie with Buffalo for the Mississippi 8 championship by defeating visiting Cambridge-Isanti 55-50 in the regular-season closer March 1, the same night Buffalo defeated Big Lake 57-37. The Bison and STMA will duke it out in the Section 8AAAA quarterfinal rubber game since they were seeded No. 4 and 5 in that tourney.
