Playoff path set for Braham, C-I girls hoops

Braham girls basketball, with its 26-0 record, was seeded No. 1 in the Section 7AA South to begin its defense of its four straight titles. The Bombers will open against No. 8 Pine City (7-19) at home Wednesday, Feb. 27.

A victory would send Braham to the 7:45 p.m. quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 2 at UMD against either No. 4 Rush City (12-10) or No. 5 Mora (7-19). Also in that half of the brackets are North No. 2 International Falls (19-7) and North No. 3 Virginia (13-13). Saturday winners will face in the March 5 7:45 p.m. semifinal game back at UMD.

Esko (23-3) is the North No. 1 seed in the other half. Aitkin (20-6) and Moose Lake-WR (17-9) are the South Nos. 2 & 3 in that half. The 7AA championship will be March 7 (7 p.m.) on the UMD court.

The Bombers closed the regular season with a perfect 16-0 mark in the Great River after handling Onamia 81-26 Feb. 22.

Jacket Girls No. 3 in 7AAAA

Cambridge-Isanti (16-10) is seeded No. 3 in Section 7AAAA girls basketball and will open at home Thursday, Feb. 28 against No. 6 St. Francis (7-19). A victory would send the Bluejackets to the 8 p.m. semifinals on March 5 at North Branch against either No. 2 Anoka (17-9) or No. 7 Blaine (0-26).

No. 1 seed Forest Lake (20-6) receives a first-round bye and will take on either No. 4 Andover (11-15) or No. 5 Duluth East (8-18) in the 6 p.m. semis Tuesday night. The 7AAAA championship will be Friday, March 8 (7 p.m.) back at North Branch.

On Feb. 22, St. Michael-Albertville wrapped up the Mississippi 8 title by pulling away in the second half to defeat the Bluejackets 69-55. Scoring for C-I were Brynn Liljander (20), Paige Muehlhauser (9), Lily Porta (8), Justine Larson (6), Amanda Hanson (5), Sydney Larkin (4) and Maria Vavra (3).

Bomber Boys perfect in GRC

Braham will carry a 58-game conference win streak into next season after defeating visiting Onamia 76-52 Feb. 26. The Bombers also topped Legacy Academy 88-60 on Feb. 21, paced by Connor Tschumper (21 points), Zach Dahlman (17 points/16 rebounds), Shaun Hollenkamp (16 points), Chris Olson (15 points), John Larson (9 points/8 assists) and Sam Stigen (6 points/9 assists).

Jacket Boys go 1-2

Buffalo kept pace with St. Michael-Albertville atop the Mississippi boys basketball standings when they won at Cambridge 69-48 Feb. 21. Leading the Bluejackets were Matt Swanson (18 points), Kyle McDonald (10 points) and Aaron Allen (6 points).

On Saturday, the Jackets fell 73-51 to section-partner Duluth East who is coached by CIHS graduate Rhett McDonald. The C-I boys rallied on Feb. 26 by getting past Monticello 54-53 on K. McDonald’s last-second shot.

Warriors win season closers

The Cambridge Christian boys closed the regular season with a 23-1 overall mark by doubling up visiting Christian Life 84-48 Feb. 22. Grant Taylor led the Warriors with 19 points, followed by Peter Maring  (18), Jake Bergman (17), Josh Roble (11) and Anders Boyum (11).

The Warrior girls are 18-4 heading to next week’s CAL Finals after defeating the CL Hawks 71-48 Feb. 22. Kristin Bergman scored 24 for CCS, aided by Shelby Doble (13), Jerusalem Solomon (11) and Kellie Pedersen (10).
