Five Bluejackets reach State Wrestling

Cambridge-Isanti will send five wrestlers to this weekend’s State Tournament at the Xcel Center after a productive Section 7AAA Individual Tourney at Anoka Feb. 22-23. Senior Travis Holt earned his third-straight trip after winning the 145 lb. title at sections and will be aiming to medal all three years at State.

Holt opened sections with two falls, including sticking Anoka’s DeLeon in 37 seconds in the semis. He faced rival Lincoln Mallinger of St. Michael-Albertville in the championship and worked for a 3-1 decision.

Ty Torgerson placed 2nd in the Section 7AAA 152 brackets to earn his first State trip.

Four Bluejackets– Ty Torgerson, Travis Swanson, Cody Skog and Kyle Chromy– all finished as 7AAA runners-up to advance. Senior Torgerson broke through for his first State trip when he pinned his first two 152 foes, then fell 7-3 to Anoka’s Krone in the finals. He rallied by pinning STMA’s Herian in 3:02 in the True Second match.

Skog, a junior, will make his fifth-straight trip to State and third as a Bluejacket when he pinned Begin of Anoka at 1:18 in the 160 True Second bout. He opened with a pin and a win by injury default to reach the finals where Forest Lake’s Boniface won by fall.

Juniors Swanson and Chromy also are making their first State trips. Swanson began the 120 brackets with a 17-4 major before getting past Coon Rapids’ Julkowski 6-0 in the semis. Following a tech fall loss to top-ranked Thorn of STMA in the finals, the Bluejacket forced an injury default on Blaine’s Stewart midway through his True Second match.

Chromy got off to a good roll in his 195 brackets with a pin and a 9-2 decision over FL’s McLaughlin. He then dropped 3-2 decision to Jacob Briggs of St. Michael in the championship.

More Bluejacket placewinners

In the tough 7AAA, the C-I boys kept working to stack up five 3rd places from Brady Kuntz at 106, Monty Fredrikesen at 113 and Reegan Lane going 3-1, along with Dakota Johnson at 182 and senior Derick DeMars at 285 going 2-2. Johnson fell 9-3 to STMA’s Ricky Briggs in the finals, then Anoka’s Njos prevailed 8-4 in the True Second. DeMars won by fall in his 3rd-place match, then the Knights’ Kessler took a 5-2 decision in the 285 True Second.

Kuntz finished with a 13-4 major over Germinaro of Anoka. Fredriksen defeated Blaine’s Carlson 2-0 in his 3rd-place match, and Lane topped Anoka’s Krone 10-3 in the 138 3rd-place battle.

James Fredriksen at 132, senior C.J. Schlichtmann at 170 and senior Kyle Willette at 220 all finished in 6th place for the Bluejackets, giving the team 13 places at 14 weights.

“Overall, it was a pretty good section tournament for us,” described C-I Coach Neil Jennissen. “This is a tourney where you have to be on your toes at all times.”

St. Michael-Albertville, the top-ranked Section 7AAA Team champions, showed its depth by having 12 wrestlers make State out of the individual tournament.
