Knights beat Jacket boys in 7AA hockey play-in

St. Michael-Albertville, seeded No. 8 for the Section 7AA boys hockey tournament, defeated No. 9 seed Cambridge-Isanti 4-2 in the Feb. 16 play-in game at St. Michael. The Bluejackets close the season with an 8-18 overall record.

The Knights led 2-0 midway in the second period when Mitch Renstrom’s goal off assists from Elliott Simon and Jake Sylvester got Cambridge-Isanti on the board. Simon followed with another goal three minutes later to knot the score at 2-2 heading into the third.

STMA’s Aaron Michaelson found the net 5:45 into the last period for the eventual game-winner, with Connor Spetz adding an empty-netter with 9 seconds to go. Jacob Sibell finished with 37 saves in the Bluejacket nets.

• In Tuesday night’s quarterfinals, top-seed and 3rd-ranked Duluth East shut out St. Michael-Alb. 15-0. East (22-4) will take on No. 4 Cloquet (16-8-2) in the Feb. 23 semifinals at Amsoil Arena after the Lumberjacks topped No. 5 Forest Lake 6-2 Feb. 19. In the other semifinals, it’s No. 2 Grand Rapids (18-4-3) vs. No. 3 Elk River (16-10). The Section 7AA championship will be Feb. 28 back at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

The Bluejackets closed the regular season with a 2-0 loss to Mississippi 8 champ Buffalo Feb. 12 and a 3-0 loss to Legacy Christian Feb. 14. Leading scorers for the Bluejackets this season were: Collin Anderson (11G/12A- 23 points), Veeti Uuttera (7G/16A- 23), Mitch Renstrom (11G/10A- 21), Elliott Simon (10G/3A- 13), Jake Sylvester (5G/6A- 11) and Preston Simon (1G/8A- 9). Sibell finished with a 3.07 GAA and 90.9% save pct. over 18 varsity games.

Forest Lake takes 7AA girls title from Elks

Top-seed Forest Lake defeated No. 3 seed Elk River 3-2 in the Feb. 14 Section 7AA girls hockey championship in Blaine. The Rangers (15-10-2) advance to this week’s Class AA State tourney, opening Thursday against Eden Prairie at the Xcel Center.

The Elks began the tourney with an 11-0 win over Cambridge-Isanti-Mora-Pine City Feb. 7, then they needed two overtimes to defeat No. 2 seed Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 6-5 Feb. 9. Forest Lake blanked No. 4 Duluth 2-0 in the other 7AA semifinals.

North Wright County, the 2013 Mississippi 8 girls hockey champion, also reached the Class AA State tourney by beating Moorhead 4-0 in the Feb. 15 Section 8AA finals. The Riverhawks (23-4-1) open State Feb. 21 against Lakeville North.
