Bluejackets take 4th at own invite

The CIHS pool area was a packed house on Saturday when the annual Bluejacket Invite was held with eight teams competing. The Cambridge-Isanti boys closed in 4th place– just 17 points out of 3rd– at the meet won by Forest Lake.

Senior Calvin Cicha is priming for a strong finish to the 2013 season, leading the Bluejackets at the invite. Cicha opened the meet by joining John Solberg, Josh Minnihan and Chase Griffin on the 3rd-place Medley Relay (1:49.8). He then took 3rd in the 200 IM at 2:12.1, and followed that up by winning the 100 Breaststroke by two seconds at 1:04.8.

Cicha also was on the 3rd-place 200 Freestyle Relay, teaming with Griffin, Joe Lewis and Darren Codner for a 1:36.2 mark.

The C-I Divers added more big points to the team total. Parker Brown was 2nd with 366.85 points, and Cody Hemmelgarn was right behind in 3rd with 301.7 off the board.

The Bluejacket Backstrokers had three entrants place for points: Solberg (5th, 1:02.6), Gage Maas (14th, 109.1) and Colin Perra (16th (1:10.3). The 100 Freestyle racked up 28 more points as sprinters Codner (5th, 54.4), Lewis (9th, 55.3) and Griffin (12th, 56.3) placed well.

More top placings for the Bluejackets at their invite were: Lewis in the 200 Free (9th, 2:03), Codner (7th, 24.3) and Griffin (9th, 24.6) in the 50 Free; Minnihan (12th, 1:03) and Ryan Hunt (13th, 1:05) in the 100 Butterfly; Alex Heinen (9th, 5:43) and Peter Edblad (10th, 5:45) in the 500 Free; Adam Baxter in the 100 Breaststroke (8th, 1:11); and the 400 Free Relay of Codner, Lewis, Edblad and Solberg (4th, 3:39.4).

• The Bluejackets close the Mississippi 8 portion of the 2013 schedule with a Jan. 31 home meet against Buffalo in what should be a tight battle.

St. Michael-Albertville usurped Monticello in the Mississippi 8 by claiming the conference championship 95-86 over the Magic Jan. 24.
